Day 4 - Lido di Tarquinia to Lido di Ostia (92km, 1,030m)

Tuesday, May 7th

Ride Profile (My Garmin - last section missing due to flat battery)

After yesterday's late afternoon downpour, we so wanted the day to dawn sunny. While we didn't quite get that, at least it wasn't raining and the view from my hotel room was promising (the sea is just beyond the trees).

Morning briefing took place at the front of the hotel and just as it finished Tony received the call from Rob that Carla had given birth to Alexandra Jean about an hour earlier.

But the briefing continued despite the excitement on the phone!

Hand shakes all around, followed by 40km to the highest point of the day at Tolfa. It had clearly rained earlier, but the square and terrace overlooking the valley was full of locals enjoying the day. They were even offering us dry sits on which to have our coffee (as well as waving to the camera).

But the sky was forboding:

And the bikes apprehensive about possible rain.

On the way back down the hill it started pouring, and Tony W and I took shelter under some trees on the side of the road for 15 minutes until it passed. While there are no photos of this, or the nice kebabs we had in Manziana, you can be sure that the ride was lovely, despite the rain.

By the time we returned to the coast, the sun was out, and cycling the complicated route around Fiumicino (Rome) airport was not as unpleasant as we expected, despite more traffic than we would have liked.

And after the airport we cycled along both sides of the Tibor River en route to our hotel on the coastal town of Lido di Ostia.

Where naturally we had some drinks, followed by dinner in a local restaurant, somewhere around the back of this building:

Before a Trip Advisor search for dinner, and an eventful night in the Hotel Ping Pong (see tomorrow's blog):
