Day 7 - Baia Domizia to Pompei (110km, 500m)

Friday, May 10th

Ride Profile (My Garmin)

The daily briefing at the hotel was more about how to get back to the main road than it was about how to get to Pompei avoiding Naples, which was really what today was about.

After cycling about 30km we found a small town, but the "peloton" argued about which coffee shop was best - nothing unusual here either. What was unusual was that Tony D must have decide to spend the day without the grandfathers of the team (we hadn't seen him since we set off from the hotel).

Surprisingly, after passing through much of the "mafia" areas of outer Naples we found a quite respectable place to have lunch, including with some outdoor furniture just for us. By the time, Tony D had caught up with his companions, "Team Scotland".

For the rest of the ride this was the group of cyclists. There was a good mix of map readers and GPS readers to ensure that we never (well, hardly ever) got lost. In general, this group was made up of some fairly strong riders.

After negotiating the suburbs of Naples, we started a long, straight, but not steep climb up to the slopes of Vesuvius. Somewhere along this road we stopped for afternoon tea.

Towards the top of the climb, and just before turning to go around the slopes of Vesuvius, we stopped for a train.

The rest of the day's ride was uneventful, except that most people thought the abundance of cobbled roads, poor surface, and one way streets (up which we had to go) made it less than enjoyable.

Dinner was at a nearby hotel, and the food was ordinary, the wine very ordinary, but the price cheap.
