Day 10 - Pontecagnano to Marina di Ascea (84km, 550m)

Monday, May 13th

The view from the hotel window wasn't the best of the trip, but the room was clean and comfortable (unlike the streets in this end of town). Fortunately, the bar/restaurant in the distance was much better than the "film set" that the hotel itself provided - no service, no cold beer...a front for the local mob perhaps?

The bikes were stored in a hgarage under the hotel, and sorting them out in the morning created a few minor "issues".

The start of the ride was long and straight and so the peloton made good pace. So much so that it completely missed one of the best set of Greek "ruins" on this part of the coast. Note to BA - mark these points of interest on the daily route instructions.

Thanks to Chery from Team Tandem, here is a photo of the temple at Paestum that we missed:

(According to Chery, the temple is very much larger that the pine in the foreground).

Just up the road (down the coast) was the first coffee stop of the day - team Trevor and half of Team Tony found a nice place by the sea. Team Tartan and the other half of Team Tony found a better place further along.

Either way, we all had a view of the castle on the top of the headland in Agropoli - we decided to visit it on the way through town.

It was wasn't exactly on "piste" but the climb was well worth it as Team Trevor captain would agree (that's him coming in under the arch).

The weather was getting warmer and the views were spectacular. For some reason Team Tony member TD didn't arrive, even though it was his idea in the first place! Another faux Tony required here?

After another hour or so of cycling we detoured towards the sea and found a lovely delicatessen in which to by the makings of a bread roll, cheese and prosciutto lunch. Team Tandem thought a bar down by the port was a better options - perhaps they were right?!

From here to the hotel was 30km of coastal road going up and down over a series of headlands. This was great riding, but it also brought out the testosterone in the boys, and even in some of the girls.

Just near the evening's hotel was a set of pre-Roman ruins overlooked by a medieval castle.

With so much time to spare before dinner, I set off to explore the site and met Team Tartan captain Carol along the way.

The views were spectacular, and the ramparts were great to explore.

Dinner was back in the hotel, and after way too much wine, the hotel opened the discotheque and everyone got up to dance, including Sue, Carol, Rob and David.
